Business school heads vow to fight axing of MBA apprenticeship

The heads of foremost British company colleges have vowed to thwart federal government options to axe the MBA apprenticeship by splitting the review into two, with the vast majority however being included by the instruction programme.

Apprenticeships for senior executives have mushroomed adhering to federal government reforms to capabilities funding that forced businesses with once-a-year payrolls higher than £3m to set aside an equivalent to .five per cent of this sum for paying on workplace instruction strategies.

Unhappiness that levy cash had been being expended in this way, on programmes costing up to £18,000, prompted education secretary Gavin Williamson to seek out a evaluation into the MBA apprenticeship with an eye to eradicating it from the levy technique.

The Office for Training has not but formally scrapped the MBA apprenticeship. But in the most recent listing of apprenticeship expectations issued by the administering agency, the necessity to receive an MBA or other masters diploma to total a senior leader qualification has been slice.

Nonetheless, David Oglethorpe, dean of Cranfield university’s university of management, told the Economical Occasions that his establishment would keep on to give an MBA no matter what the result of the evaluation.

Under Mr Oglethorpe’s proposal, learners would total a senior leader apprenticeship and then undertake an more piece of coursework and spend an extra rate to receive an MBA. Some learners may possibly have to spend this demand, which could be up to £9,000, by themselves but it would however only be a portion of the full rate.

“I have been fighting tooth and nail to say go away it as it is, but this usually means we could however give the qualification,” Mr Oglethorpe explained.

“The feedback we get from businesses is that it aids them catch the attention of and keep essential team. A fifth of our consumption occur from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds and 15 per cent had never been to university right before setting up the programme.”

“The senior leader apprenticeship conventional has been mapped on to an MBA curriculum, creating it easy for us to give an MBA for those that would like 1,” Mr Oglethorpe explained. “We would have to demarcate the two skills but that is relatively very simple to do.”

This way of funding an MBA has benefits, Mr Oglethorpe additional. “Whilst the qualification continues to be element of an apprenticeship conventional, you simply cannot question employees to contribute to the value. If you could, it would suggest they would have pores and skin in the activity.”

Other company university heads explained they had been contemplating similar preparations if the federal government resolved to get rid of the MBA from apprenticeships.

“The MBA is noticed as a significant thing on a CV so there will often be an incentive to give a route to getting this as a result of the apprenticeship,” John Board, dean of Henley Business enterprise School.

“The more substantial danger is that the federal government cuts the rate businesses must spend for the apprenticeship, which would no for a longer period make it feasible for colleges like us to give our training course. You would then be left with vendors who only spend lip service to the expectations essential for superior-quality management instruction.”

The plan of presenting an MBA individually to the apprenticeship also gained the backing of the Chartered Management Institute, the accreditation human body for management education in the British isles.

“It would set a strange precedent if the federal government explained that businesses simply cannot spend for their employees to review for this qualification if that is what they want to do,” Daisy Hooper, the CMI’s head of coverage and general public affairs, explained.

“The apprenticeship levy has broadened entry to the MBA. Restricting this will move it back again to getting to be an elitist qualification.”

The Office for Training explained: “The education secretary questioned the Institute for Apprenticeships and Specialized Training to evaluation the senior leader apprenticeships conventional to ensure it is conference its aims and delivers benefit for funds. The evaluation is ongoing.”
