WASHINGTON—President Biden is predicted to announce a sequence of updates about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, together with ideas to transfer thousands of Afghan translators out of the region by the conclusion of August, according to administration officers.
The administration has but to identify where by translators would be moved whilst they await approval to enter the U.S., but “it is most likely to be a combine of 3rd countries and U.S. territory,” a senior administration official stated. “For now this is incredibly substantially in progress.”
Among countries the U.S. is considering are Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as perfectly as Guam, officers stated. The translators moved out of Afghanistan could be in these countries for a long time as they await a valid U.S. visa.
White Residence press secretary Jen Psaki explained to reporters Thursday that the U.S. would be conducting flights in August to relocate translators and other Afghan allies of the U.S. She declined to say where by they would be relocated, but confirmed they would be housed at U.S. facilities exterior of the continental U.S. and in 3rd countries.
Officers estimated the number of Afghans who assisted the U.S. and who will need to be evacuated at in between 9,000 and 16,000. In June, Mr. Biden promised that the U.S. would relocate the translators, but he didn’t supply a distinct time frame for undertaking so.
