American Banker reporter Claire Williams opinions “The Long term of Small business Journalism: Why it Matters for Wall Road and Primary Street,” created by her previous professor Chris Roush.
Williams writes, “Where did that go away folks like me, at 20 decades previous at the University of North Carolina, going for walks into Roush’s enterprise reporting course for the to start with time? I took organization reporting and economics reporting classes with Roush, now dean of the College of Communications at Quinnipiac College, when he ran the company journalism application at UNC.
“Sure, reporting is exciting, and it could be useful, but it is not well worth substantially to me if I can’t make a profession out of it. Screw it, probably I must hear to my parents and go to legislation college. Or even worse, into public relations.
“But what sets Roush’s new book (and his courses) aside is his insistence that superior journalism and lucrative journalism are one particular and the exact same. I did not, luckily, go to regulation school after having Roush’s class. As an alternative I went to operate at a person of those local newspapers everybody appreciated to communicate about.
“They were being one of the fortunate ones that mainly experienced a enterprise desk nevertheless intact, but the vacant chairs in the newsroom echoed the tale that Roush told in his guide. Still, nearby small business leaders clamored for our coverage, and complained there wasn’t enough of it. That, Roush suggests, is not just a civic misstep, but a missed business enterprise prospect.”
