HONG KONG—Chinese authorities have detained a lawful scholar regarded as just one of the number of distinguished voices in China still willing to openly criticize President Xi Jinping’s management, the professor’s buddies say.

Xu Zhangrun, a legislation professor at Beijing’s prestigious Tsinghua University, was taken by police from his suburban property in the Chinese cash on Monday early morning, according to his buddies, who cited a housekeeper and a neighbor who witnessed the approach.
